Our best tips on how to save as much as you can before you go

  • Book your trip in the low season and you could save 30-70% off airfares and accommodation (and you can avoid the stampedes of tourists!)

  • Get an ISIC card before you go to score heaps of student discounts all over the world.

  • Book as much as you can (transportation/accommodation/tours etc) using your credit/debit card so you'll get the best currency conversion rate.

  • Research the best ways to barter - ask friends and family who have been to Turkey, Morocco, Spain, and Greece for tips on getting the best prices from sellers.

  • Book as much as you can online - the best deals are usually there.

  • Move back in with mum and dad 6-12 months before you go overseas. You might score some home cooked meals, and the money you're not spending on rent can go straight into your travel savings account.

  • If you are living away from home then try and grocery shop for food for the week. Pack lunches, and cook dinners -  you'll save a ton!

  • Detox! Get off the booze and you'll also save a ton.

  • Check your airlines baggage allowance long before you get to the airport so you don't get charged for excess baggage before you even leave home (or afterwards).

  • Budget  - calculate how much money you think you'll need to live comfortably on while you're away so you have a money goal to achieve.

  • Save, save, save! Initially, put aside at least 10-20% of every pay cheque into a separate savings account that's not connected to an EFTPOS or Visa Debit card, so it's harder to dip into.

  • Have your company payroll team put your dedicated percentage straight into your separate account directly so you won't even miss the money.

  • Tell your friends and family your special savings account details so they can deposit money into your travel fund (instead of buying you birthday/farewell pressies!)

  • Sell your old textbooks on Textbookexchange (it's still free!) and put the money in your account.

  • Sell stuff you never use on eBAY or hold a garage sale, and add that money to your travel fund.
